Most of us are aware of the fact that we need to eat healthier everyday – that we need to consume leafier green vegetables and fruits and reduce our carb and sugar intake. However often times we stray from our healthy diet and are easily tempted by high-carb high-sugar foods such as hot dogs, burgers, candies and cakes that provide us with little nutritional value. Then we get upset with our own lack of self-control and feel guilty. Maybe it is time not to be so hard on ourselves – after all, this is not entirely our fault – our taste palate have a prominent role to play in making us crave some of the not so healthy foods. In fact research shows that sometimes our taste buds can get chemically addicted on certain foods making it difficult for us to quit.
So how could we retrain our taste buds to eat healthier? Since it is possible to change the taste of your palate, theoretically it means we should be able to make our taste buds crave the healthier foods in preference to the non-healthy choices. In this article, we share with you some of the ways in which we can retrain our taste buds.
One major step is to eliminate sweet and salty foods for a month as this will help our taste buds to start afresh and reset with a new threshold of tolerance. Then we have a window of opportunity with a new tolerance level to try more healthy wholesome options. As a general rule, eating less processed food and more whole foods and also making your own meals at home instead of restaurant take outs will help to significantly reduce the amount of salt in the food.
We can try other flavors or spices such as cinnamon or pumpkin spice to jazz up our healthy foods making them more desirable. When we have reset our palate to a new threshold, we are more likely to feel satiated with a small sugary bite instead of mindlessly indulging massive amounts of sugar.
In order to eliminate sugar in drinks, the best alternative is water or any flavored water. Also it is a good practice to gradually reduce the intake of sugar in daily coffee or tea. Additionally, many spices such as cinnamon are great sugar alternatives and can be used instead of sugar. Also it is a good idea not to give up on chocolates but to switch from milk to dark chocolates.
